Bow Maintenance Tips: Keep Your Archery Equipment in Peak Condition
A well-maintained bow isn’t just about longevity—it’s about accuracy, safety, and consistency on the range. Whether you shoot a recurve, compound, or traditional bow, regular maintenance should be part of every archer’s routine. Here’s how to keep your equipment performing at its best.
1. Inspect Your Bowstring Regularly
Your bowstring takes the most abuse. Check for fraying, dry spots, or separated strands before every session. Apply bowstring wax every 2–3 weeks—or more often if you shoot daily. Run the wax along the string, then rub it in with your fingers until it melts into the fibers. A well-waxed string lasts longer and delivers smoother releases.
2. Check Limbs for Cracks and Twists
Hold your bow at eye level and sight down each limb. Look for hairline cracks, splinters, or twisting. Even minor damage can affect shot consistency and pose a safety risk. If you spot anything suspicious, have a professional inspect it before shooting again.
3. Keep Everything Clean and Dry
Wipe down your bow after each session with a soft, dry cloth to remove moisture, dust, and skin oils. Store your bow in a cool, dry place—never leave it in a hot car or damp basement. For compound bows, a light silicone lubricant on the cams keeps them rotating smoothly.
4. Inspect Arrows and Accessories
Bent arrows, loose fletchings, or cracked nocks can ruin your groupings. Flex-test carbon arrows after any hard impact and discard anything suspicious. Don’t forget to check your sight pins, arrow rest, and stabilizer mounts for tightness.
