Airgun Training Tips for Beginners: Start Shooting with Confidence

Getting started with airgun shooting is exciting, but like any precision sport, building a solid foundation makes all the difference. Whether you’re interested in target practice, plinking, or eventually competing, these airgun training tips for beginners will help you develop good habits from day one.

Master Your Stance First

Before worrying about aim, get comfortable with your stance. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, weight slightly forward, and your body aligned at roughly 45 degrees to the target. A stable platform is the bedrock of airgun shooting accuracy — if your body is swaying, your shots will too.

Breathe and Squeeze

The most common beginner mistake is jerking the trigger. Instead, focus on slow, steady breathing: inhale, exhale halfway, hold, and squeeze the trigger gently. The shot should almost surprise you. This technique, borrowed from marksmanship fundamentals, dramatically improves your grouping at any distance.

Follow Through Matters

Don’t drop the rifle the moment the pellet leaves the barrel. Maintain your position and sight picture for a full second after each shot. This follow-through ensures you’re not introducing last-second movement — a habit that separates casual shooters from serious marksmen.

Start Close, Go Slow

Set your target at 10 metres and don’t move it back until you’re consistently grouping shots within a 2-inch circle. Progressive distance training builds confidence and muscle memory faster than chasing long-range shots too early.
