Knife Throwing Techniques for Beginners: How to Stick Your First Throw

There is something deeply satisfying about the solid thunk of a knife sinking into a wooden target. Knife throwing for beginners might look intimidating, but with the right technique, even a first-timer can stick a blade within minutes. Here is what you need to know before your first session at OnPoint Archery in Toronto.

Find Your Distance First

The biggest beginner mistake is standing at the wrong distance. Most standard throwing knives complete one full rotation over roughly 3 to 4 metres. Start at about 3 metres from the target. If the handle hits first, step back slightly. If the blade over-rotates and the handle points up, step forward. Dialling in your throwing distance is more important than power — once you find the sweet spot, consistency follows naturally.

Grip: Blade or Handle?

Beginners should start with a handle grip — hold the knife by the handle with your thumb along the spine for control. It is easier to release cleanly than a blade grip and gives you better feedback on your rotation. As you progress, experiment with the blade grip for shorter-distance no-spin throws.

The Throw: Smooth and Steady

Keep your wrist locked and your arm straight — think of a pendulum swing, not a baseball pitch. Bring the knife up beside your ear, then swing forward in one smooth motion, releasing when your arm points directly at the target. Follow through with your hand pointing at the bullseye after the release. Jerky or wrist-heavy throws are the number one cause of wild misses.

Safety First, Always

Never retrieve your knives while someone else is throwing. Always wait until the range is clear. Throwing knives are real tools and deserve the same respect you would give any other piece of equipment. At OnPoint Archery, we provide a supervised indoor knife throwing range where safety and fun go hand in hand.
