Competition Preparation: How to Get Ready for Your First Archery Tournament
Get ready for your firstarchery tournament
Stepping onto the line at your first archery competition is equal parts thrilling and nerve-wracking. Whether you are aiming for a local club shoot or a provincial event in the Toronto archery scene, preparation is the difference between a fun day and a frustrating one.
Same passion.
A stronger you.

A strong community
A brighter aim
More than a sport.
A community.
Start with a solid practice routine
In the weeks leading up to your tournament, shift your practice from casual shooting to structured training sessions. Simulate tournament conditions: shoot the same number of ends you will face on competition day, time your shots, and practice scoring every arrow. If you normally shoot indoors, get outside — wind, sun, and uneven terrain all add variables you need to experience beforehand.
- Practice like a tournament
- Time your shots
- Score every arrow
- Train indoors & outdoors when possible
Dial in your equipment
A tournament is not the place to discover your sight is loose or your arrows are mismatched. Inspect your bow, check all screws and fittings, and make sure your archery equipment is competition-ready at least a week out. Pack a spare bowstring, nocks, and an Allen key set in your gear bag — small fixes can save your whole day.

Prep your mind, not just your bow
Mental preparation is as important as physical practice. Visualize your shot cycle, plan how you will reset after a bad end, and remind yourself that your first tournament is about learning, not perfection. Nerves are normal — even Olympians feel them.
- Visualize success
- Develop a reset routine
- Be kind to yourself
- Focus on learning and improvement
