IKTHOF vs WKTL vs IATF: Which Knife Throwing Organization Is Right for You?

If you’ve caught the knife throwing bug at OnPoint Archery, you might be wondering how to take it to the next level. Three organizations dominate the competitive knife throwing world — IKTHOF, WKTL, and IATF — and each has its own style, rules, and culture. Here’s how they stack up.

IKTHOF — The Traditional Powerhouse

The International Knife Throwers Hall of Fame (IKTHOF) is the oldest and most traditional knife throwing organization. Founded to preserve and promote the sport, IKTHOF competitions require three identical knives and three identical hawks, thrown at multiple targets in a single round without retrieving. It’s a test of consistency and precision. Their 2026 World Championships run September 4–8 at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort.

WKTL — The Standardized League

The World Knife Throwing League (WKTL) offers standardized rules for competitors worldwide. Throwing distances typically range from 10 to 15 feet, and the WKTL enforces a Code of Conduct that sets professional standards for commercial throwing venues. If you want a league format with consistent rules you can train for at any affiliated venue, WKTL is the most accessible option.

IATF — Axe Meets Knife

The International Axe Throwing Federation (IATF) recently expanded from hatchet throwing into knife throwing. Their knife rules are adapted from classic IATF hatchet rules but modified for the different throwing style and difficulty. In tournament play, the first five throws (or two flights for knives) are thrown side-by-side on adjacent targets. If you already throw axes or want a single organization that covers both, IATF is your pick.
