Is Indoor Archery Good Exercise? Calories, Muscles & Benefits
Indoor archery · Scarborough
The workout hiding in plain sight
Archery has a reputation as a stationary, low-effort activity. Spend an hour on the range and you'll find out otherwise — in your shoulders, your back, and your core, usually about two days later.
Comparable to a brisk walk — but archery also builds muscular endurance that walking doesn't touch. Beginners shoot 60–80 arrows in a one-hour session, and every draw-and-release is an isometric contraction, the same engagement that makes planks and wall sits work.
What archery actually works
Back
The draw motion engages your entire back — the same muscles rowing targets. Regular shooting builds a strong, defined back with no gym equipment involved.
Shoulders
Holding a bow steady at full draw keeps your anterior delts under sustained tension, while the rotator cuff stabilises the joint through the whole shot cycle.
Arms
Your draw arm's biceps work with your back through the pull, while the bow arm's triceps lock out to hold the bow still.
Core
Holding posture shot after shot demands constant core engagement. A stable core is the foundation of accuracy — strengthened without a single crunch.
An hour of archery vs an hour of anything else
Pick your burn
1-hour archery intro
$39.99 per person
60–80 arrows for a first-timer. You'll feel it in your shoulders, back, and core by the end of the hour.
2-hour archery intro
$69.99 per person
Double the arrow count, plus 20-yard shooting — more draw weight and more stability work under sustained tension.
The focus is part of the workout
Exercise isn't only muscles and calories. The cycle of nock, draw, anchor, aim, release becomes almost meditative, and the breath control it demands lowers cortisol the way moderate aerobic exercise does. Regulars describe an hour on the range clearing their head the way a run or a yoga session would — physical conditioning and a mental reset in one booking.

Straight answers
Is archery good for weight loss?
It won't replace high-intensity cardio, but it complements a routine by building lean muscle and improving posture, at 150–500 calories a session. Paired with walking or other cardio, it's a strong addition.
Do you need to be strong to start?
No. Beginners start on 16–22 lb draw weights that almost anyone can manage, and you move up naturally as strength builds. Coaches match you to the right bow on day one.
How often to see fitness results?
Two sessions a week is enough to notice back and shoulder strength changes within three to four weeks. The six-session starter package ($199) is built around that cadence.
Can seniors shoot for exercise?
Yes — it's low-impact, joint-friendly, and scales to any fitness level. Plenty of our regulars are seniors who come for the balance training and upper-body conditioning without the strain.
